Biomass refers to living and recently dead biological material that can be used as fuel or for industrial production. Most commonly, biomass refers to plant matter grown for use as biofuel, but it also includes plant or animal matter used for production of fibres, chemicals or heat. Biomass may also include biodegradable wastes that can be burnt as fuel. It excludes organic material which has been transformed by geological processes into substances such as coal or petroleum.

Biodiesel Future Energy

Biomass is organic material made from plants and animals. Biomass contains stored energy from the sun. Plants absorb the sun's energy in a process called photosynthesis. The chemical energy in plants gets passed on to animals and people that eat them. Biomass is a renewable energy source because we can always grow more trees and crops, and waste will always exist. Some examples of biomass fuels are wood, crops, manure, and some garbage.

When burned, the chemical energy in biomass is released as heat. If you have a fireplace, the wood you burn in it is a biomass fuel. Wood waste or garbage can be burned to produce steam for making electricity, or to provide heat to industries and homes.

Burning biomass is not the only way to release its energy. Biomass can be converted to other usable forms of energy like methane gas or transportation fuels like ethanol and biodiesel. Methane gas is the main ingredient of natural gas. Smelly stuff, like rotting garbage, and agricultural and human waste, release methane gas - also called "landfill gas" or "biogas." Crops like corn and sugar cane can be fermented to produce the biofuel, transportation fuel, ethanol. Biodiesel, another transportation fuel, can be produced from left-over food products like vegetable oils and animal fats.

Biomass fuels provide about 3 percent of the energy used in the United States. People in the USA are trying to develop ways to burn more biomass and less fossil fuels. Using biomass for energy can cut back on waste and support agricultural products grown in the United States. Biomass fuels also have a number of environmental benefits.

[renewable-energy] Pickens Trinity Power Plant concept using the Stirling idea

Pickens Plan is to put $ in Pickens pocket by Pick'in yours. He is an oil man, possibly with alot of dry wells. With that said, he will now put wind upon the barren property, thus making the land profitable. Pickens (an Oil Man,) has been exploiting consumers for some time, he is now expanding his exploitation to include renewables. Renewable energy on a self sustaining platform should mean that it can be "portable," and "renewable." If we base our society on agrarian means, than we can co-exist in a renewable fashion. However, our society such that it is, means we can never totally remove ourselves from burning/consuming, fossil/carbon based fuels. We have to produce industrially. This requires fuels. Until the time we as a society harnesses the potential of the sun, we will forever rely upon the fuel base at hand. As for Mr. Pickens, his ideas as presented on his commercial advertisements appear sound. Underneath, I am sure they are self serving. Serving up the next p
latforms for tomorrows capitalists. This is not a bad thing. I only wish that I had the means to capitalize. As individuals, almost all home owners and smaller communities can enjoy the benefit of wind and sun. Those in cities and heavily industrialized areas are not as fortunate, but still may enjoy limited reneable success.

Ultimately, Pickens is on the right track and I would never slight his efforts to make a better world for all. However, his knowing the impact his industry had upon society and the world as a whole, I cannot but question his motivations, Guilt, a better world, or just that we are sending more (his) money overseas for oil. Either way you hope that the consumer will benefit. My answer is more wind, more solar, more well thought out hydro, biomass, tapping landfills, etc... Even off shore drilling, because we will still need the fossil fuel.

It still burns fuel. Are we not trying to get away from burning fuel?
Stirling motors have been around for years. They work, but the real answer is to
stop burning fuels 100%. If the Stirling motor did not burn fuel to create
energy than that is great. Wind, Solar and Hydro are pure renewable energy. There
is another renewable energy that works but at this time it is not fully
tested. The major problem that I find with renewable energy is it is not portable
in nature. This means that it is true renewable energy must be fixed and not
portable in nature. The mind set of utility companies with power plants are
they still need some sort of fuel to produce electricity. This type of
thinking is the reason why we have these problems we face today. We can not fix
this problem by thinking the same way that created this problem. The only way we
can fix this problem is to use renewable energy. Renewable Energy offers us
many advantages over burning fuels. The major advantage is with renewable
energy there is no cost to produce electricity. There is no fuel to burn and
renewable energy has no carbon footprint. When every you burn anything to create
energy; you have a carbon footprint. It makes sense that we switch from the
old way to the natural way. The natural way in the long run cost less to
operate. Look at solar electric systems. Do you see any moving parts that can
break or wear out? The fuel is the sun's energy. With wind you will see moving
parts. There is no answer to which one is better. The answer is wind, sun and
moving water is better than using fuel to create energy. The problem that we
face today is because we have burned fuel to create energy. There is a group
that has joined a oil guy named Pickens. He is upset that the wealth of our
nation is going to off shore oil. Because he is upset with the results he is
trying to make the United States government and our fellow Americans aware of
this fact. He calls it the Picken's Plan. No one that is a member really
knows what his plan is all about. Maybe he really does not have a plan. Is he
concerned with burning fuel for energy? Is he concerned with the money being
spent for off shore oil (this seems likely). What has he done about this
problem? As far as I know he has done nothing but started a Army of Americans that
are concerned with America's future. I see the problems that we have in a
different way. If electricity is free from renewable energy. This means we do not
need fuel to produce energy. This also means that there is no more need for
fuel for energy. Now as the United States of America can be independent of
offshore oil. This is a big savings for the American people. This means that we
can save our money. Just think of how our future will change.
